Ostrander established that Martian Manhunter is the most recognized hero in the Southern Hemisphere, and that he maintains a number of different secret identities, many of them outside the United States. However, following two incidents later in the series in which John Jones separates from Martian Manhunter, he decides to focus on his original human identity and retire the others.

The series establishes that J'onn has a disturbed brother, Ma'alefa'ak, who uses his shapeshifting abilities to pose as J'onn, capturing and torturing [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jemm Jemm, Son of Saturn], and [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terraforming terraforming] part of Earth to resemble Mars (areoforming). The first issue revealed that there was a "real" human John Jones, a police detective who is murdered by corrupt colleagues, and that J'onn subsequently assumed his identity to complete an important court case.In issues of ''JLA'' written by [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Kelly_%28comics%29 Joe Kelly], J'onn attempts to conquer his fear of fire and makes a deal with a flame-wielding villainess named [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scorch_%28comics%29 Scorch], who wants J'onzz' telepathic help in dealing with her own mental issues. The story served to redefine his traditional aversion to fire - he is now invulnerable to flames unless they are "flames of passion" or of some other "psychic significance." Using the events of ''[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_III_%28DC_Comics%29 World War III]'' as a catalyst, DC Comics redesigned the appearance of the character, changing his costume and giving an appearance that more closely resembles that of his Martian form. Those changes were further explored during a ''Martian Manhunter'' [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Limited_series limited series] that spun out of the ''[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DCU:_Brave_New_World DCU: Brave New World]'' [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One-shot_%28comics%29 one-shot]. Written by A.J. Lieberman with art from Al Barrionuevo and Bit, the series portrayed a Manhunter more mistrustful of humanity and their actions towards each other. The mini-series focuses on J'onn's search for other survivors of Mars.

Following this mini-series, J'onn was intended to be in [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outsiders_%28comics%29 Outsiders]. He appeared in the third issue of the ''Outsiders: Five Of A Kind'' series with [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thunder_%28comics%29 Thunder], and joined the team afterwards. Before his death he proclaims: "Your kind will fail... your kind will always fail... defeat is in your destiny, Libra... now and forever!" The events of those two issues are explored in the one-shot, ''Final Crisis: Requiem''.

In ''[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackest_Night Blackest Night]'' storyline, a [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_ring_%28DC_Comics%29 black ring] appears before the body of J'onn, saying "''J'onn J'onzz of Mars.......RISE!!''". Martian Manhunter possesses a wide variety of superhuman powers, many of which are similar to those of [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superman Superman] and [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wonder_Woman Wonder Woman], including super-strength, super-speed, invulnerability and flight. Like Superman, Martian Manhunter has "Martian vision" (a term designating both the ability to see through solid objects and the ability to generate optic beams of force and heat). Superman once called him "the most powerful being on the face of the earth".

During the '90s, it was stated that the source of his flight and "Martian vision" is a form of telekinesis (he had occasionally demonstrated more traditional uses of telekinesis to levitate and animate objects during his ''[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Detective_Comics Detective Comics]'' and ''[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_of_Mystery House of Mystery]'' appearances). His martian vision has been shown to knock foes backwards on impact which could be due to their telekinetic nature.

The Martian Manhunter also possesses the power of [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shapeshifting shapeshifting], which he employs for various effects (e.g., adopting human or monstrous appearance, elongating his limbs, growing to immense size). He can alter the chemical makeup of his body to imitate various materials such as steel or stone. J'onn can render himself invisible, and is also able to become intangible so as to pass harmlessly through solid objects. He is a powerful telepath, capable of both perceiving the thoughts of others and of projecting his own thoughts. He often acts as a "switchboard" between minds in order to coordinate the Justice League's actions. The extent of his telepathic abilities is great; several times he has connected to the entire planet Earth.

He has demonstrated regenerative abilities, once able to regenerate himself from only his severed head but with great strain (due to the loss of mass he found it necessary to incorporate new matter from Martian sand). Early appearances of the character show him as able to breathe underwater; the last time he displayed this power was when he encountered [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zauriel Zauriel] in the sea of San Francisco in ''JLA'' #6. The Manhunter has sometimes been said to possess nine senses, but these additional senses are poorly defined and generally ignored by most writers.

One of the Martian Manhunter's signature traits is his vulnerability to flame. Although it has been an element of the character since his earliest appearances, writers have depicted it with great inconsistency throughout the character's long career. In some instances, it is portrayed as a physical susceptibility inherent to the Martian race, while at other times it has been explained as a personal psychosomatic disorder. The degree of vulnerability has also been wildly inconsistent, in some cases capable of stripping away his powers and killing him, while at other times simply inflicting pain or delirium with no actual danger of physical harm. This weakness has been diminished or cured on more than one occasion, only to have it return with a vengeance in a later story. Thus, it is difficult to define.

In his earliest appearances, the character was shown as having a weakness to fire while in his native Martian form. 	The way that the Dark knight ended made it seem like Batman would be fighting society rather than a villan . It could be a very good drama. Batman having to be hunted by society dealing with Rachels death. I honestly think this would be the logical choice to continue the plot. Rather then bringing in the Riddler or resurrecting Two face or catwoman or the penguin. But say if certain characters considered villans were in the story wouldnt be bad . == History ==
Tony Romulus competed in several prestigious competitions, usually being very successful. The fame and power went to his head, however, and he felt the need to become even more successful. He eventually called upon Dr. [[Milo]] to aid him. Milo came up with a serum possessing wolf pheromones, a serum that would be untraceable in drug or tests. Romulus hastily accepted, not knowing he had been tricked by Milo. Afterwards, his expanded incredibly, having become the best athlete in any competition. The serum had horrible side effects, however, as Anthony was eventually transformed halfway into a werewolf during a night of the full moon. When he came to Milo for help, Milo revealed that he couldn't cure Romulus in his present state as there was none. However, he did have a cure for complete lycanthropy and so he made Anthony a bargain; he would complete his transformation into a full werewolf, however Romulus would have to obey certain orders given to him by Milo, including the elimination of persons who Milo considered dangerous to his work. Romulus accepted and was fully transformed into a werewolf, which he would become during nights when the moon was full.Romulus caught the attention of [[Batman]] when he — known simply as "a wolflike creature" — was spotted at the Gotham Zoo attacking a guard who had information that could lead back to Milo. After reporting that he had encountered Batman whilst on his attempted assassination, Milo decided that they needed to get him out of the way. Romulus then put out word that he wished to make a charity donation, that he would only sign over if Batman accepted. When explaining why to Bruce Wayne, who was an associate of Romulus from their gym, he mentioned he merely wished to meet Gotham's 'second-best athlete'. Later during the night, Batman arrived in Romulus' study, with the intent on picking up the cheque as quickly as possible. However, it was all revealed to be a trap, as Romulus activated knock-out gas from his venting system and incapacitated the Dark Knight. Romulus and Milo then brought Batman to Milo's secret workplace, at the under-construction Gotham Coliseum. They chained Batman in the middle of the arena, with Milo intent on having Romulus transform and kill Batman whilst he was immobile. Despite everything, Romulus refused and pressed Milo for the cure, Milo however, gave Romulus a concentrated dose of the wolf serum in order to make Romulus even more ferocious against Batman. However, this made Romulus so aggressive that he even attacked Milo, trying to kill him and ignored his orders. Milo barely escaped Romulus, who then turned his attentions on Batman. Batman was luckily able to free himself just before Romulus attacked and proceeded to fight back against him, now a wild uncontrollable beast. Batman was somewhat of an underdog in the fight, but held his own. Eventually as the fight continued to the tallest exteriors of the structure, Romulus was seemingly defeated when he was struck by lightning and knocked off the edge. Milo was arrested, but the fate of Romulus remains unknown. Harvey Bullock snidely remarked that they would wait until the next full moon, then they would know for sure whether Romulus was alive or dead. Months later, as Romulus' former mansion was purchased, a wolf-like creature was seen howling into the night. It was still unknown, if this was Romulus.

== Abilities ==
Anthony was already a superb athlete before he took the wolf serum. After taking the serum, he virtually became the best in every field, beating his competitors seemingly without effort. After his complete transformation into a werewolf, which would happen every full moon, his wolf form would be even larger, more powerful and more ferocious than he could ever hope to be in his human form. He had no speech or recognizable thought capabilities whilst changed, but his more bestial instincts easily proved to be dangerous enough to eliminate to need for such. Batman himself noted that in a fair physical fight on even ground, he would be no match for Romulus as a werewolf and was forced to find smarter tactics. Background InformationAnthony's Human appearance is modeled on a typical stereotype of classic 30/40's era Werewolf films (.i.e. he has a monobrow and is a wealthy man), whereas his Wolf form is closer in appearance to creatures seen in The Howling.

== Plot ==
It's a peaceful night in Gotham Park and a man, [[John Hamner]], quietly walks his dog. The dog, however, starts to get agitated and growls at an unseen creature. The man dismisses the dog's fears but he is soon confronted by a hulking [[man-wolf]]. The werewolf prepares to kill the man but [[Batman]] arrives and saves him. The werewolf however, manages to escape.

Batman goes to see [[Commissioner Gordon]] and tells him about a "mugger in a werewolf mask." Gordon checks the files but only learns that a couple Alaskan Timber Wolves were stolen from the Gotham Zoo. Remembering that the victim was a guard from the Zoo and finding some fur on his gloves, Batman realizes that it's possible that the mugger wasn't in costume but really was a werewolf.

The werewolf heads out an smashes his way into Dr. Milo's cabin. Dr. Milo is unconcerned however, and waits for the werewolf to revert to his human form. He assures the man that everything will be over soon now that the guard has been killed but the man tells him that he failed due to Batman's interference. Dr. Milo is outraged and decides that the werewolf has a new target.

Later, a radio announcement states that the Olympic champion, Anthony Romulus will be making a donation to a charity and will double it if Batman himself arrives to receive the check. Talking to Romulus, Bruce asks about the interest in Batman and Romulus claims he wants to meet "Gotham's second best athlete."Batman arrives to meet Romulus who seems friendly enough but Batman discovers that the room is filled with a knockout gas. He tries to put on his gas mask but it's too late and he passes out. Dr. Milo then arrives and puts the second part of his plan into motion.

While the two men wait for Batman to awaken, Romulus angrily waits for the unpleasant task of killing Batman. He confronts Milo over the evil he's made him do but Milo reminds him that he's the only one with the cure to Romulus' condition. Romulus reminisces on how he trained to become a champion but he wasn't satisfied. Wanting to make sure he'd win, he went to Milo for a performance enhancer. Milo showed him a serum derived from steroids and wolf estrogen. Desperate for the guaranteed win, Anthony snatched the vile and gulped the serum down. The serum proved to be a success and Anthony won at every event he competed in. With the fame, he amassed a fortune but he turned back on Milo's deal and refused to share the profits. This proved to be a mistake however, as the serum infected him with Lycanthrophy. Romulus went to Milo to seek out help but Milo tricked him into drinking a formula that completely turned him into a werewolf. The price for the cure: complete loyalty and obedience.Meanwhile at the Gotham Zoo, Hamner is confronted by [[Harvey Bullock]]. Bullock discovered that Hamner was paid a few thousand dollars for leaving the wolves' cage unlocked. Unfortunately, he doesn't know who hired him.

Back at Milo's cabin, Romulus' condition takes hold and he transforms. However, instead of killing Batman like he was supposed to, he goes after Milo. In fear, Milo drops the antidote and makes the werewolf really angry. In his rampage the werewolf smashes the cabin and causes Milo to fall into a ditch. With Milo out of the way, the werewolf attacks Batman who manages to get free of his chains. However, Batman is no match for the creature. Looking to even the odds Batman climbs up to the top of the stadium where he was chained. Bullock and other officers arrive. Knowing that Batman is up there, Bullock orders the officers to hold their fire and watches as Batman uses the heavy hook on a crane to stop the werewolf. The werewolf manages to grab hold of the crane but lightning strikes it and the werewolf falls into the river. Dr. Milo is taken into custody but the werewolf disappeared.

Later, Romulus has disappeared and his house is sold to pay off his creditors. The buyers ask the realtor where he went but she says that he just disappeared. The buyers wonder why he left, "Guy's got just about everything and he gives it up?" Elsewhere, the werewolf howls at the full moon

==Synopsis==
===Attack of the Invisible Knights!===
A collection of Black Opals that date back to medeival times are presently on display at the Gotham Museum, however each night it appears as though the suits of armor on display are moved every night. Finding it suspicious, Batman and Robin are called in to investigate.

That night the dynamic duo are attacked by the suits of armor, and afterwards find that the opals have been stolen, and that the suits of armor weren't possessed by ghosts, but controlled with magnets instead. Batman and Robin then track the Opal's to museum employee Abner Jenkins who is attempting to sell them off. Batman and Robin stop them and turn them over to the police. The very next day, Batman and Robin in their civilian identities of Bruce Wayne and Dick Grason go and see the Opals on display.

===Robin's Unassisted Triple Play!===
After a night of studying, Dick Grayson goes down to the Batcave to see what Bruce Wayne is up too. There, he sees that Bruce has put on the finishing touches on a video survalance system that allows them to monitor Gotham City. Noticing a crime in progress, the two change to Batman and Robin and rush out to stop the crooks involved. However, Batman gets an urgent call from the Justice League of America, and so leaves Robin to handle the situation on his own.

Unable to stop the crooks (who use plants to execute their heists) Robin tracks them to their base, and attacks them. By creating a distraction (a rock crashing through the window) to make the crooks think that Batman is also present outside, Robin is able to gain the upper hand and capture the crooks.

The next day, Robin reports to Bruce explaining that he was able to give the illusion that Batman was there by putting a rock on a pulley system to make the rock crash through the window.

===Remarkable Ruse of the Riddler!===
The Riddler has finally been released from prison following his last defeat at the hands of Batman. While in prison, he has thought of a new way to committ crimes. However, when he reads the newspaper, he learns that Batman has been busy trying to catch the Mole-Hill Gang. Wanting Batman's undivided attention, the Riddler approaches Batman and Robin telling them that he's reformed in prison and that he wishes to help them catch the Mole-Hill Gang.

With the Riddlers aid, Batman and Robin eventually do catch the Mole-Hill Gang, however two days later, they receive a riddle from the Riddler while at the Police Athletic League picnic in Gotham Park. However, this time, and all subsequent riddles given to the dynamic duo after the fact lead them to the Riddler conducting legal business. This is all orchistrated by the Riddler in the hopes of discrediting Batman and Robin, and hopefully that the next time he compulsivly gives them a riddle for a real crime they'll think it's a false alarm and not bother.

However, when the Riddler robs the safe of the Ox Club, he is stopped by Batman and Robin, however before they can take him away, the Riddler activates a device that makes his body spin like a top. However, Batman finds the exact place to shut off the device, then quickly punches out the Riddler, and sends him back to prison.
