The Batpod is Batman's primary vehicle in The Dark Knight. Intended as a kind of "escape pod" integrated into the Batmobile, it also serves an an auxiliary vehicle.
Armed with dual front-mounted cannons, machine guns and grappling hooks, the Batpod affords Batman greater mobility at the cost of some protection.
Batman first uses the Batpod to escape from the Batmobile after it is critically damaged by a RPG round fired by The Joker. He then uses the Batpod to pursue Joker, and crash the semi truck he is driving.

The Batpod is The Dark Knight's version of the Batcycle.
The workings of the Batpod were explained in a special on The History Channel, including the facts that it is steered with the driver's shoulders, not his hands, which are left free; and that the engine(s) are actually mounted inside the wheels instead of the frame.
