[edit] Stopping Joker
Batman designed the Batwing in a custom way. His first known use of it was after Joker's rise to power. Batman fired upon Joker's Goons with the Batwing's guns, dropping some of them. Batman used it to dispose of The Joker's balloons. The Batwing was destroyed by The Joker's long barrelled gun, and it crashed at the steps of Gotham Cathedral.
[edit] Flying to Claw Island
Batman developed a second flying craft, which he also called the Batwing. He flew it to Claw Island to end Two-Face and The Riddler's reign of terror.
The Riddler fired a high-powered laser at the Batwing, causing it to crash into Gotham Harbor. Batman's ejected it's wings, and proceeded to pilot the Batwing in it's underwater submersible mode. When he found Robin being attacked by Riddler's Frogmen Batman ejected himself through the front of the Batwing to fight them. The second Batwing's cockpit was abandoned, and another Batwing wasn't known to have been built.
[edit] Behind the scenes
The first draft of Batman Returns was intended to be a direct sequel to the previous film. As a result, subplots and continuity from the first film that would have been addressed included gift shops selling fragments of the destroyed Batwing.
