The Gotham City Police Department was the team that was tasked with protecting and serving the citizens of Gotham City. The top of the building where the origination is headquartered is where the Batsignal is kept.

History[]

Before Batman's war on crime in Gotham, the GCPD were investigating fronts of crime lord Carl Grissom. Some members, such as Lt. Max Eckhardt, were receiving bribes from the mobster and his associates, keeping Gordon and Harvey Dent from investigating them.

Batman[]

GCPD led by Eckhardt were seen taking two muggers into custody after they were apprehended by Batman. One of the officers tipped off Alexander Knox about the incident, leading to his arrival and questioning of several members.

Confrontation at Axis Chemicals[]

After an anonymous tip was given to Eckhardt, the GCPD mobilized an assault on Axis Chemicals to apprehend Jack Napier and his men. The officers were given shoot-to-kill orders on all the members, including Napier himself. However, Gordon quickly took over command and receded Eckhardt's orders. During the confrontation, officers, including Gordon, caught glimpses of Batman as he subdued Napier's men and pursued the criminal to the Main Mixing Chamber. During the battle, Eckhardt was gunned down by Napier in revenge for his duplicity. It is unknown whether any other officers died during the battle. After Batman escaped them, Gordon told the officers who'd seen him to remain quiet on his involvement.

Assassination of Vinnie Ricorso[]

Several GCPD officers were present in Gotham Square when Vinnie Ricorso attempted to claim control of the later Grissom's empire from Napier, who'd now become a theatrical criminal called "the Joker". However, when the criminal appeared and murdered Ricorso, the officers guarding the building were gunned down by his henchmen. GCPD officers later responded to the scene, some of whom blamed Batman for the tragedy.

Car Chase Through the Streets of Gotham[]

Several GCPD officers responded to the car chase between Batman and the Joker's henchmen, arriving on the scene to apprehend those that crashed at an intersection. Officers also assembled at the Batmobile whilst Batman and Vicki Vale were fleeing on foot. When the vehicle drove off on its own, they gave chase in their cars, but eventually lost it in the pursuit.

Skirmish of Gotham Cathedral[]

Though absent from the 200th Anniversary Parade, the GCPD were led by Gordon to the Old Gotham Cathedral after Batman foiled the Joker's plan to release Smylex-filled balloons at the parade. Following both the criminal and vigilante inside, they were cut off when the former destroyed and blocked the tower's stairwell with his Acid Flower. The GCPD could only observe the skirmish occur, using floodlights to make it more visible from the ground. Gordon and other officers also investigated Joker's body after he'd fallen from his helicopter.

Batsignal Unveiling[]

In the time after Joker's demise, the GCPD worked to disband and round up his remaining men. This resulted in the end of both criminal control over Gotham. During a press event, Gordon revealed that Batman had given the GCPD a large floodlight with a bat to summon him if needed. This began their partnership with the Dark Knight, calling on his help to deal with situations too large for them.

Different Fates[]

Several different accounts are offered for what happened to the GCPD after Batman defeated Penguin. At least two claim that the force became reliant on Batman to deal with more extravigant criminals, including Two-Face, Riddler, Mr. Freeze, Poison Ivy and Bane.
